Colbert meets the press (Susie has the links to the video, transcript here, Pam has reactions from Lucianne.com here - personal favorite: "Whoever invited him failed to realize that he is MOCKING conservatives and Fox News types (especially O'Reilly), not in a nice way either" although, you know, he could be right at that)

FWIW, I disagree with most of the analyses I've read about when he lost the more - ahem - collegial folks in the audience. I think they were prepared to laugh at the President, to the extent that they thought they wouldn't be punished by the White House for it.

I think he lost them with this
But the rest of you, what are you thinking, reporting on N.S.A. Wiretapping or secret prisons in Eastern Europe? Those things are secret for a very important reason, they’re super depressing.

And if that's your goal, well, misery accomplished. Over the last five years you people were so good over tax cuts, W.M.D. Intelligence, the affect of global warming. We Americans didn't want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew.

But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works. The president makes decisions, he’s the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Put them through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know fiction.

Jokes about the Washington Press not doing their jobs: not funny. Not one single bit funny. In very, very poor taste. Also not funny.

Don't think they were too tickled by the reference to the extent of McCain's much-discussed mavericity either.

I, on the other hand, enjoyed it very much.

As Steve Gilliard mentioned, he said everything I would want to say.

I've seen Colbert funnier, but never as focused before. As far as memorable teevee goes, it's right up there with Jon Stewart's Crossfire appearance.

I was going to say: having Stephen Colbert speak at a White House press correspondents' dinner is like having Jon Stewart host the Oscars.

They were wonderful, and neither of them will ever touch a podium again.

Well, that just makes me happy.

I hate to be out of step with everybody else in Left Blogistan, but I'm not convinced that Colbert lost them with this politics -- I thought he was very funny, but I thought Jon Stewart was funny at the Oscars, and the audience didn't.

I think audiences at these venues want a more conventional type of comedy -- you're supposed to do the standard thing and give a signal at the end of each joke, one that says, "Please love me. Please laugh." Even Al Franken does that. Most comics do. But Stewart gets so deep into the deadpan that he didn't give the H'wooders the satisfaction of being asked to laugh. And the same goes for Colbert because he's so deep into his persona.

It was too subtle for these audiences -- and it didn't stroke their egos. And they weren't led gently by the hand to the punch lines. I think that's what they resented.

Colbert

Best assessment I've read: they are very thin-skinned. And I also think the press that wants access to Bush didn't want to be seen laughing, even when they thought it funny. Bawk-bawk-bcawk!
