via TBogg, Janice Crouse of CWA on why those pesky surveys (and pregnancy rates) showing that virginity pledges don't keep kids from having sex aren't, you know, signs that virginity pledges aren't keeping kids from having sex
The findings have raised the ire of Concerned Women for America, a prominent conservative organization that advocates adolescent sexual abstinence.

"The Harvard report is wrong," said Janice Crouse, a fellow at a Concerned Women for America think tank.

"This study is in direct contradiction with trends we have been seeing in recent years," Crouse said. "Those who make virginity pledges have shown greater resolve to save sex for marriage."

She means it, too.

Janice Crouse of CWA on Why we should keep as much of our AIDS prevention funding as possible from going to programs in Africa that distribute condoms, in light of women's lack of sexual autonomy within marriage in many cultures and the fact that thirty million people there already have the infection and only 50,000 are being treated for it (1/3 currently goes to "Abstinence Programs")
JANICE CROUSE: I'm against condoms as a solution to the-- problem of sexually transmitted diseases. I'm against condoms as a solution to the AIDS epidemic. Uh… I hear so many people blithely say, okay, let's distribute condoms and we'll cut down on the disease. We'll make it much safer for a girl to be a prostitute. And she can choose this as an appropriate career option.

The names of these people didn't spring to Dr. Crouse's less-than-academically-rigorous mind, but there are, we are assured, people who believe this "passionately."

I think we can count on "recognized expert on the family" Dr. Crouse (whose CWA bio doesn't specify what exactly she is a PhD in, but does list her experience as a debate team coach and GHWB speechwriter, as well as her experience in "authoring" Congressional Testimony) to be just as fundamentally serious about your daughter's virginity as she is about a generation of african children dying orphaned in a puddle of their own diarrhea so she has an opportunity to repeat one of her strawman talking points for the US market and send some funds to her friends.

You're on your own, is what I'm saying.

And the “Right to Life” groups claim that sex ed classes increase teen pregnancy and sexual activity, in direct contradiction to all the actual studies on the topic.

Remember, if it disagrees with the NeoCon agenda, it must be flawed.

On a side note, I know plenty of women who, in Jr. High and High School too virginity pledges. They usually took them after a night with a guy, and were terrified that they were pregnant.

Based on what I've seen, “virginity pledges” are used primarily by women who are trying to make a deal with God. “I'll NEVER do this again if I'm not knocked up now, please oh please oh please.”

Well, except for the ones who thought they might have an STD. Can you guess how many of them went out and got tested for various diseases?

I have absolutely nothing against anyone being celibate who wants to wait for a permanent relationship.

If the RC church is reconsidering the use of condoms for couples with an HIV+ member, this bint doesn't get to write it off as phantom feminists who think african women need to have more casual sex.

Lovely. So she's real good at talking about stuff she has no academic grounding in.

I'm so pleased that this woman has chosen to inject herself into our global health policies.
